How does Yoga help with balancing your mental Health?

The practice of yoga began in ancient India thousands of years ago. It was developed by sages who wanted to understand the nature of existence and the human condition. They discovered various techniques and disciplines to create harmony, balance and a deeper connection with oneself and the universe. Yoga is rooted in the quest for self-realization, inner peace and the understanding of our interconnectedness with the world around us.
In creating balance we enhance the action of homeostasis, the perfect balancing of the nervous system, which encourages mental health wellbeing in the following ways;
- Stress reduction: One of the primary benefits of yoga is its ability to reduce stress. Through deep breathing, relaxation techniques, and mindful movement, yoga helps activate the body’s relaxation response, which counteracts the stress response. Regular practice of yoga can help lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and promote a greater sense of calm and relaxation.
- Anxiety and depression management: The combination of physical movement, breath awareness, and meditation in yoga helps regulate the nervous system and promote a more balanced mood. Yoga also increases the production of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that are associated with improved mood and well-being.
- Improved mental focus and clarity: The mindful and meditative aspects of yoga cultivate present-moment awareness and focus. Regular practice enhances concentration, attention span and mental clarity. It can also help to quiet the mind and reduce racing thoughts, leading to a greater sense of mental tranquillity.
- Emotional regulation: Yoga encourages the exploration and acceptance of emotions without judgment. Through the practice of asanas (physical postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises), individuals can learn to connect with their bodies and become more aware of their emotional states. This can lead to improved emotional regulation and a greater ability to respond rather than react to challenging emotions.
- Increased self-awareness and self-acceptance: Yoga promotes self-reflection and self-inquiry. Regular practice helps yogi’s develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their thoughts, and their patterns of behaviour. This develops self-acceptance and the ability to make positive changes in one’s life.
- Better sleep quality: Many people struggle with sleep disturbances due to stress, anxiety, or insomnia. Practicing yoga before bed or engaging in relaxing yoga sequences can help calm the mind and release tension in the body, promoting better sleep quality and more restful nights.
- Body-mind connection: Yoga emphasizes the integration of the body and mind. By focusing on the breath and movement during yoga practice, you develop a stronger connection between physical sensations, thoughts and emotions, which develops a sense of wholeness, balance and overall well-being.
While yoga can be beneficial for mental health, it is not a substitute for professional treatment. If you are experiencing severe or persistent mental health issues, it’s important to seek support from a qualified mental health professional.
