Visualisation to improve happiness

Sacred Space visualisation

The Scared Space is a place we create through visualisation to help keep us in balance when life’s stresses start to weigh down, confuse or over compliacte life for us. We create a place that is holy, pure and entirely safe. It is a wonderful tool available to use at any time in our lives when life gets too much. It is a wonderful practices to use during Yoga Nidra (Yogic sleep) when/if the movement between the instructions of opposites gets too intense and we get scared, stressed or just freaked out.

Within this sacred space we enter the healing world of our own inner sanctuary. Here our life’s woes become lighter, we can reason and think more rationally and we can rebalance the nervous system.

We can use this visualisation during Yoga Nidra or Savasana, but even better we can use this any time we feel life is throwing too much at us.

Creating our sacred space;

To initially create our space it is always good to do so at a time and place where we will not be disturbed. Lying down or sitting in a comfortable position, leaving distractions such as phones etc outside the room. Start to become aware of your breath and try to allow yourself to melt and settle into the ground beneath you.

As you relax, start to imagine yourself sitting in a place where you’ve always felt safe. If you cannot remember anywhere, then start to visualise a place you’d like. It can be a beach, the forest a meadow or even just in your bedroom. The slowly start to expand the picture; image the sounds that surround you, the smells and the colours. Imagine trees, flowers, plants and animals that you love. What is the temperature like, does your skin feel hot or cool, and can you taste the salt in the air or the flavour of your favourite ice-cream?  You can invite your favourite person to sit with you, someone you feel utterly safe with, someone you know loves and respects you. Make the entire visualisation as colourful and vivid as possible.

Sit or lie and bathe in the healing nature of your sacred space and when ready slowly let go, start to breath deeper, bring some gentle movement into your hands and feet. Slowly flutter your eyes open and see how you feel.

Once you have created this sacred space you can now go ahead and use it whenever your mind needs a break. At work, just nip into the bathroom, sit down, close your eyes, focus on your breath and bring yourself back too that place. Your place may change over time but always keep it as a safe place to allow yourself to heal and reconnect with your true nature.
